Hubbard Dance Company
February 8, 2009 at 5:47 am | In Performance | Leave a CommentI have not gone to the Emerson Majestic Theater in a long time, it looked lovely. But on this cool winter night, it was very HOT in the balcony. Despite that, I had a great time watching for the first time the Chicago Hubbard Dance Company. My friend SL was able to make it and come along with me.
After having a busy day of ushering, Korean language and Japanese language practice, I had fun catching this performance.

This weekend, The Celebrity Series of Boston presents Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, an aptly named troupe that takes the rigor of classical dance as its foundation and builds a jubilant, sometimes riotous, architecture of more modern forms atop it.
This 90-minute presentation (including two 15-minute intermissions) is a non-stop flurry of charm and invention in which darker undertones (almost subliminal sexual aggression) vie with light, delightful prowess: the dancers move with perfect synchronization, acting out dramas that illuminate the corners of passionate intimacy between couples and sketch out group dynamics and tensions.
The first act, Alejandro Cerrudo’s 2006 piece “Lickety-Split,” is a 15-minute opus that combines mime, martial arts, and modern dance; three couples creative intricate patterns in their performance space, arraying themselves around the stage or clustering in tightly synchronized groups, whirring through speedy, precise exchanges of movement that contain fiery longing, strains of tenderness, and fleeting moments of implied violence: punches, slaps, a suicidal gesture with an imaginary gun.
The dance unfolds to several urban-folksy ballads by Bay Area artist Devendra Banhart: it’s clear from the start why this is called “Street Dance.”
“Gimme,” a seven-minute work by Lucas Crandall, is a charming fantasia about power and the balance between cradling a romantic partner and keeping her (or him) in line–literally: dance partners Jessica Tong and Jason Hortin start off bound by a length of cord that connects them, but also restrains and sometimes hauls each of them by force; each takes turns tugging and yanking at the cord, which eventually is used in a funny, knowing riff on the famous spaghetti strand scene from “Lady and the Tramp.” Bla Bergens Borunder’s Irish-inflected music is a perfect accompaniment to the theme, and the costumes by Branimira (Hortin is dressed like a bike messenger, Tong in a provocative red dress) speak to urban archetypes of man and woman.
“The Constant Shift of Pulse,” a 16-minute piece by Doug Varone, unfolds to John Adams’ “Hallelujiah Junction,” a muscial selection that grows gradually more jazzy and, finally, discordant, like some sort of disintegrating ragtime number. So too the dance, which is frenetic, jubilant, and ever more frantic: the dancers fling themselves into sleep and at one another in erotic pairings: boys with boys, boys with girls, girls with girls, and everybody in constant motion (when not spent and sprawled on the floor singly or in entwined pairs), exploring their own and everybody else’s physical capabilities: it’s like watching a group of 20-somethings in a mythical Bohemia (or artist’s village tucked into a larger city scene) sort out their passions in fast-forward.
The longest, most intricate work is the final act, a 24-minute epic set to Ravel’s “Bolero.” It’s in this last act that everything the group has done so well in earlier acts–timing, dramatic interpretation, supple physical control–comes together in a sustained, faultless whirl that incorporates isolation, lust, romance, loss, rescue, and poignancy, all built around the central metaphor of a wall.
The wall, in this piece, provides boundaries but also imposes barriers: allows opportunities in the form of doors through which the dancers pop in and out, but also inflicts passages of existential loneliness (when the walls literally close in on one character and the music is abruptly muffled); the wall even demonstrates an ability to show unexpected versatility, with sections falling over into platforms on which the dancers hold forth… or else standing firm as dancers throw themselves against, and stick to, it. All of the works play with the tensions and allure that exist between the sexes, but this piece tips its hat to Bob Fosse, who knew a thing or two about sexual joy and its corresponding anxieties.
For an audience that’s been subjected to some awfully cold weather lately, “Hubbard Street Dance Chicago” sweeps in like a vitamin shot laced with sunlight, a timely taste of the exuberant and the vital that brings to mind the pleasures of spring.
“Hubbard Street Dance Chicago” will perform at the Cutler Majestic Theatre, located at 219 Tremont Street in Boston’s Theater District tonight, Saturday, Feb. 7, at 8:00 p.m., and tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 8, at 3:00 p.m.
Tickets cost $42, $52, and $65, and can be obtained online at www.celebrityseries.org or via telephone at 617-482-6661 or 1-800-233-2132.
Happy Go Lucky (2008)
February 6, 2009 at 8:11 pm | In Movies | Leave a CommentNeeding a movie to catch, my friends and I ended up catching “Happy Go Lucky” directed by Michael Leigh. The story of a very cheery and peppy 30 year old gal named Poppy played by Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins who is a single elementary school teacher. She loves with her room mate of 10 years who she adores. She enjoying life with her friends and family and always has wonderful optimism.
The movie starts out with her having her bike stolen. No biggie, she signs up to take driving lessons. Well her driving instructor is a complete 180 opposite from her. In addition, she encounters challenges that could change her positive outlook from her fiery flamenco instructor, a young bully in her class, bitter pregnant younger sister in addition to her cranky and cynical driving instructor. Still she weathers these challenges well.
Definitely a fun movie and Sally Hawkins just shines! I did find her “peppiness” a bit much at times. Could a person be really this way? If there is, bless their soul I must say.

ABDC season #3
February 6, 2009 at 7:24 pm | In ASIAN, TV Show | Leave a CommentSince Randy Jackson started last early summer with America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC) I have been loving this show! (Thank you MTV for allowing to have episodes to be watchable online!) I did not realize it was back—thanks unni! So I caught up and watched the first three episodes.
Right now I love and think the top two look like to be Beat Freaks (go all women crew!) and Quest Crew (love that they are Asian and Hok rocks!) if the audience voters don’t mess up. Though strong contention would be the Strikers All Stars.
This season has been refreshing because you saw various new stuff never seen by the main stream and were absent the first two seasons-clumping, striking and the stuff with their body contortionist moves by the just ousted Ringmasters (last week).
This time around they did not show the auditions. But from the first episode, they went to more places and had more people try out for the top 9 crews to perform. The first episode was sudden death. The crews really brought their game. Second episode was the FIT TEST, meaning each crew had to do a difficult move incorporated into their dance routine. This last episode was the Britney Spears challenge creating a routine on a Britney hit and given a difficult task. I was very impressed by the challenges and the new dance crews ingenious ideas!
There is more entertainment, cleaner routines, variety and amazing choreography that I am looking forward to each week.
Who know that the very masculine and powerful Quest Crew for the Britney challenge input a convincing “feminine sequence” but not seem “effeminate” either. On top of that, they had to do moves “blindfolded”. WOW! Amazing! Or that Strikers All Stars did the mirror image and the effective use of their prop-amazing. Even the usual boxy and baggy bboy dancing group Beat Freaks really brought their femininity out (not their usual comfort zone) for their dance routine-it was hot! Even Shane was not expecting them to bring it and breaking out of their usual bboy shell. I think an all female crew is finally going to make it to the final three or two this time.
Episode 1-Ousted-G.O.P Dance (Puerto Rico)
Episode 2- Boxcuttuhz (reminded me of last season’s Fanny Pack but not as good)
Episode 3-Team Millenia were ousted (though this time they were better than their first outing).
Ringmasters (only East Coast Crew) They made Lil Moma cry but in a good way during the first episode. I think that these kids from Brooklyn are a positive role model to try to avoid the streets in a positive way. Their moves are gravity defying and scary to watch.
I am waiting for the fourth episode (this weeks to be on line).

The Bachelor #13-Jason Mesnick
February 6, 2009 at 6:27 pm | In TV Show | Leave a CommentI know the ABC Reality Show -The Bachelor with Jason Mesnick is probably my fave as he seems so genuine. I liked him when he was vying for DeAnna Pappas (the last Bachelorette). But it makes sense why she did not choose him in the end as she did not have the “connection” with him as she did with Jesse. (Heard that they are now unengaged.)
I don’t know why I get sucked in, I guess that is why this is a guilty pleasure. But I do like Jason alot. Probably because he has a 3 year old son Ty. Even my sis and I were rooting for him and usually we could care less. Plus all the Bachelors save for 2 broke up after the show. Only one couple actually married was the first Bachelorette Trista ( nee Rehn) Sutter.
I have been able to catchup. Now he is down to the top 4 gals to do the hometown dates. The one he let go was the single mom Stephanie who I felt had a heart of gold. Naomi, Molly, Jillian and Melissa are left. According to the gossip blogs, the gal he chose at the finale is engaged to him.
Definitely one way to kill time. I wish TOP CHEF had repeats I could watch. I don’t have TV and it is killing me!
K-drama Hwang Jin Yi. 황진이
February 6, 2009 at 4:41 pm | In ASIAN, Dramas, Songs, TV Show | Leave a CommentI loved this Kdrama alot. Ha Ji Won 하지원 just shined. I loved Jang Geun Suk 장근석 as her first love. I heard the film version with Song Hye Gyo is not as good. I watched this drama twice! The costumes, music and acting were top notch. The OST rocks and listening to this song reminds me of this great drama!
This MV 나쁜사람 (Bad Man) by Paek Ji Young 백지영 is lovely.
KBS Special “Shall We Dance” 아련알섬님(KR2009)
February 6, 2009 at 3:56 pm | In ASIAN, TV Show | Leave a CommentSo the ballroom dancing craze has also hit South Korea. Currently there is a KBS Special show called “Shall We Dance” 아련알섬님.where they get some entertainers-singers/dancers/models to compete. I watched some clips of the January 27th show. They show some clips of them getting ready but instead have the group sit down and then head off (a pair at a time). I saw clips of 빅뱅 Big Bang’s Seungri 승리Samba (wowed) and Seeya’s Nam Gyu Ri’s남규리 Tango (was not as good) performances. I noticed that Solbi 솔비 and M (Lee Min Woo 이민우) are also in this show as well.
Currently the MVP is Seungri 승리 with a score of 94 and he topped Solbi’s 88. I wish my Korean was better to understand all the comments and discussions. But it was fun to watch! I was glad that Seungri’s 승리 94 topped Nam Gyu Ri’s 남규리 93. (He really is the better dancer of the two.) By by the end of the night his MVP status was usurped by 백지영Baek Ji Young’s performance. (I have seen limited clips here and there.)
Dance order for 1/27/09 show:
- Goo Hara – Quick Step
- SS501 Kim Hyung Joon - Waltz
- Brown Eyed Girls GaIn – Paso Doble
- ShinHwa Andy – Jive
- Solbi - Rumba
- ShinHwa Lee Minwoo – Paso Doble
- SeeYa Nam GyuRi - Tango
- Baek Ji Young - ChaChaCha

Frozen Flower (KR2008)
February 6, 2009 at 3:54 pm | In ASIAN, Movies | Leave a CommentI really want to see the Box Office leader in South Korea right now Frozen Flower 쌍화점Ssanghwajeom. This movie made some waves with its racy bedroom scenes and the forbidden love/attraction between two male characters (King) Ju Ji Mo 주진모 and (Hong Lim) Jo In Sung 조인성. Throw in (Queen)Song Ji Hyo 송지효 there is a love triangle. I know that Lee Junki 이준기catapulted to stardom to his roll and “on screen kiss” with the King. (In reality, not a big deal, but I guess in South Korea it was a few years back.) Seems like Korean audiences are going to the theaters to see this Period Movie! I cannot wait to watch this film!
SYNOPSIS (credit: wikipedia)
In the end of Goryeo era politically manipulated by the Yuan Dynasty, the ambitious King of the Goryeo Dynasty organizes Kunryongwe. Hong Lim, the commander of Kunryongwe, captivates the King of Goryeo, and the Queen keeps her eyes on the relationship between Hong Lim and the King with a reluctant view. Meanwhile, the bilateral relation between Goryeo and the Yuan gets worse as Yuan demands to install the cousin of the King in the Crown Prince of Goryeo with ascribing it to no son the King has. The King refuses it resolutely, so the high-ranking officials of Goryeo, who are in submission to Yuan, are discontented with the king. One day, the King gives Hong Lim a covert yet unobjectionable order to sleep with the Queen instead of himself to protect the independence of Goryeo from the Yuan by making a son, the successor to Goryeo throne

I usually don’t covet jewelry but I loved that was able to help my friend find something she liked.
Circle Pendant (link )
Exquisite in its elegance, this trendy yet classic pendant is a must-have. The sheen of the rhodium-plated outer ring offsets the glitter of the inner circle that sports clear crystals set in the classic pavé style. A hint of shine is always appreciated!

Family Outing (Guest: Daniel Henney
February 6, 2009 at 3:50 pm | In ASIAN, TV Show | Leave a CommentFamily Outing 패밀리가 떴다 (episode 32-33)had special guest Daniel Henney 다니엘 헤니(19th guest) on their show for the special Lunar New Year show. (Henney is currently filming XMen in Vancouver.) I have watched the first part (broadcast 1/25/09) and the last part (broadcast 2/1/09) I have not caught yet. I had fun watching it though my Korean leaves a lot to be desired.
The “Family” comprised of a few celebrities, singers, entertainers, models come together for a weekly show and they go somewhere for 2 days and 1 night. They do the tasks the occupants usually do, have some games/challenges and take care of the house they are staying at. There are only two females (show regulars) Park YeJin 박예진 /(she is very knowledgeable about food and cooking) and pop diva 이효리 Lee Hyori and this show has only had 2 female guests thus far. Others are 김수로 Kim Su Ro, Kim Jong Gook 김종국 (new since SEPT), Yoon Jong Shin 윤종신 ,While the “Family” is together, they separate into teams for sports competitions and various tasks. In every episode they have to cook their own meals. I have only seen two episodes so far—-Rain 비 (real name: Jun Ji Hoon 정지훈 back in the fall).
In two episodes, Daniel learned how to dry squid, how Korean rice cakes are made as well as do a Korean wrestling challenge and he had a chance to cook breakfast with Lee Hyori. I love the bit where he snuck in the ramen powder while making the seafood soup. Even the discussion about their first loves and kisses was cute. Lee Chunhee 이천희 (aka Chunderella) cracked me up when he said his first kiss was in a “video bang” while watching a Stephen Chow 周星馳 movie. Dae Sang 대성 adds the cute comic relief.
When they did the New Year’s greeting their antics were funny. MC Yoo Jae Suk 유재석 trying to imitate Daniel’s cool model stare walk was hilarious. Or doing the physical sports challenges both Kim Su Ro and Yoon Jong Shim (called themselves the 40 guys). I must admit, I cracked up when the cast was using their Konglish on Daniel.

UH…
IT’S BEEN ON MY MIND FOR A WHILE
GOT TO LET THIS OFF MY CHEST
BEFORE…IT’S TOO LATE
(I CAN’T LET YOU GO
YOU GOT TO LET HIM GO
I CAN’T LET YOU GO
YOU GOT TO…LISTEN)
I’ve been telling you everyday
I smile when I see you.
I’ve told you so many times
You’re the love of my life.
In this world full of lies, in my nervous heart
the one thing I believe in is you.
When you get nervous thinking that my feelings may change
Remember I laughed when I told you that would never happen.
A direction with no end,
my completely empty heart
The only place I can lean on is you.
And I hate that my heart sometimes wavers
Even today I get carried away by the world
and you get erased
Even if I cheat
Don’t you ever cheat, Baby
Even if I forget you
Don’t you ever forget me, Lady
If once in a while I don’t contact you
and I go out to drink
Even if I ever meet another girl’s gaze
Look only at me.
When you tell me with tears in your eyes
that you spent all night waiting up for me
you say “I think you changed.”
So many nights you ask me to tell you
that my feeling are the same as when I first met you.
Although it seems that I am miserable without you
Honestly sometimes you suffocate me
The never ending arguments
The long sighs.
Although the only place for you to lean is on me
I hate that sometimes I get sick of you
Even today I smile
and lose myself without my knowledge
Even if I cheat
Don’t you ever cheat, Baby
Even if I forget you
Don’t you ever forget me, Lady
If once in a while I don’t contact you
and I go out to drink
Even if I ever meet another girl’s gaze
Look only at me.
I know well that I’m self-centered
And I spend my days in meaningless activities
Becoming filthier, baby.
I want to leave your purity as it is,
this is my sincerity, my belief in you
Don’t leave me even in death
Even if I cheat
Don’t you ever cheat, Baby
Even if I forget you
Don’t you ever forget me, Lady
If once in a while I don’t contact you
and I go out to drink
Even if I ever meet another girl’s gaze
Look only at me.
HANGUL lyrics by Ryujilee for Look at Me:
Baby
Lady
Baby
Lady
Baby
Lady
